African Journey

The Maryland Zoo recently opened the largest exhibit renovation in their 143-year history. With beautiful new exhibits, upgraded habitats, and engaging interpretive content the expansion and renovation of the lion, giraffe, and elephant habitats offers great new sights.

For the renovation project, the Zoo sought a modern African aesthetic with content that highlighted specific conservation work for the 3 species, while still presenting animal biofacts, welfare, and care information. Through weathered steel, colorful graphics, and bespoke tree posts we were able to create a modern African look, adding in a nod to traditional tribal influences through the use of pattern and color.

Gecko Group also created a comprehensive donor program. The package included both individual donor signs and an overall donor recognition area. We integrated the same materials and techniques used in the interpretive signage, resulting in a unique and cohesive donor program.
